Climate and energy model regions
Climate and energy model regions (KEM) implement climate protection projects throughout Austria in the areas of renewable energy, reduction of energy consumption, sustainable construction, mobility, agriculture and awareness-raising. The aim is to phase out fossil fuels in the long term. The SIR supports the work of the model regions with information and targeted quality management based on the instruments of e5 (internationally known as the European Energy Award, or eea for short).
Professional support
There are currently 126 climate and energy model regions in Austria, five of which are in the province of Salzburg. Their work is supported by qualified KEM-QM consultants from SIR throughout the entire duration of the programme. Our work is aimed at improving public structures and strengthening sustainable development. This ensures medium and long-term energy policy success. The broad spectrum of services provided as part of KEM quality management ranges from support in the planning and implementation of specific measures to help with the optimisation of internal regional structures and processes and the definition of success indicators. The portfolio of the KEM QM consultants also includes data research, the preliminary review and entry of collected success indicators into the eea management tool as well as support with reporting for the Climate and Energy Fund.
Auditing of climate and energy model regions
Climate and energy model regions work in three-year periods. At the end of each phase, an audit is carried out according to eea methodology in the interests of transparency and quality assurance. The external evaluation and visualisation of progress in a region are also necessary for the successful submission of an application for continuation. The KEM-QM consultants of the SIR support climate and energy model regions throughout Austria. For the auditing of the regions in Salzburg, the SIR documents the implementation successes and the overall regional development in an evaluation catalogue.
The establishment of climate and energy model regions is subsidised by the Climate and Energy Fund.
