Municipalities are crucial in housing policy, as they are the local level at which concrete measures to create and secure housing are implemented. Their tasks include planning, financial and regulatory interventions that are tailored to the needs of the population and local conditions. The SIR offers:
- Information on the efficient use of existing housing
- Information on sustainable and space-saving settlement development
- Strategy development: Creation of affordable and needs-based housing
- Strategy development: Strengthening social integration and neighbourhood quality
- Strategy development: Active land policy to mobilise land
Housing research
Housing research is concerned with the systematic investigation of all aspects of housing in order to develop sound findings and recommendations for action for housing policy, urban/municipal and spatial planning and the construction industry. It serves to better understand and actively shape the housing market, social and demographic developments as well as technological, ecological and economic challenges. Subject areas of housing research:
- Social aspects: Needs of different population groups (e.g. young people, older people, families)
- Affordability: cost trends in housing construction, subsidy models, affordability Sustainability: resource-saving construction, energy efficiency, climate protection in the construction industry
- Innovative forms of housing: Shared housing projects, multi-generational living
- Legal and planning issues: land mobilisation, building regulations
The aim is to create a basis for political decisions, promote sustainable forms of housing and effectively tackle challenges such as demographic change, climate protection and housing shortages. The SIR offers:
